This is my favorite Faust interpretation inside the Auerbachs Keller, a restaurant in downtown Leipzig. Auerbachs Keller is famous since Johann Wolfgang von Goethe mentioned the restaurant in his most famous play Faust. Modern artists have later painted interpretations from the Faust play on the restaurant's walls. In the picture, Faust is the tall figure looking towards the rising sun; Mephisto is the one cowering in his shadow.

The quote beneath the picture are Faust's words:

Erhabner Geist, du gabst mir, gabst mir alles,
Worum ich bat.
Gabst mir die herrliche Natur zum Königreich,
Kraft, sie zu fühlen, zu genießen.

[Spirit sublime, thou gav'st me, gav'st me all
For which I prayed.
Thou gav'st me glorious nature as a royal realm,
The power to feel and to enjoy her.]
